ODBC is the primary native data access API for applications written in C and C++ for SQL Server. There is an ODBC driver for most data sources. Other languages that can use ODBC include COBOL, Perl, PHP, and Python. ODBC is widely used in data integration scenarios.

The ODBC driver comes with tools such as sqlcmd and bcp. The sqlcmd utility lets you run Transact-SQL statements, system procedures, and SQL scripts. The bcp utility bulk copies data between an instance of Microsoft SQL Server and a data file in a format you choose. You can use bcp to import many new rows into SQL Server tables or to export data out of tables into data files.

Microsoft ODBC Driver 13.1 for SQL Server is a single dynamic-link library (DLL) containing run-time support for applications using native-code APIs to connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2012, SQL Server 2014, SQL Server 2016, Analytics Platform System, Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Data Warehouse. It also adds support for Always Encrypted and Azure Active Directory authentication.

I deleted Arshad's 'answer' because he made no attempt to actually answer your question.

You're one-up on me. At least your SQL Server lets you in from your Mac. Mine won't.

You are supposed to be able to record a macro to get the code you need. Have you tried using the Macro recorder in Excel 2016 on the Mac to get syntax? Turn the recorder on and then try to establish a connection. The macro recorder should record everything you need except for the password. If it does not, then that's a bug you can report using the Smile button.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for deleting Arshad's 'answer' :)

I recorded a macro then created the connection, but the code output from the macro only included the step that retrieved the data and not the bit that created the connection. I will log a bug as you suggest.

P.S. You mentioned that your SQL Server would not let you in: FYI I'm using a SQL account rather than Kerberos or NTLM authentication.

Thanks,

Niall

I am waiting for my server admin to let me in to the SQL server from my Mac.

If you don't mind trudging through on line code examples there are some that might get you started. Finding the right syntax for the Mac is sometimes tricky.

Hi Jim,

Were you ever able to repro this too? I've looked at several code examples and still no solution. I'm beginning to think it's not supported to generate an ODBC connection through VBA on Office 2016 for Mac

Thanks

In the next few days I will be attempting this very feat. I found this old thread, which might be relevant:

Dirk,

here's a quick guide to use Excel via ODBC:

1. Create a ODBC-DSN selecting Excel Driver / your file

2. (optional) remove Writeprotection (ODBC-Options) if you want to write to

the table

3. Use something like:

oConn := SQLConnection{}

if oConn:Connect('myExcelDSN',',')

oStmt := SQLStatement{'update blabla...',oConn}

oStmt:Execute()

oStmt:FreeStmt(SQL_DROP)

or

odb:=SQLSelect{'Select ...',oConn}

do while !odb:eof

odb:fieldget(1)

...

odb:FreeStmt(SQL_DROP)

oConn:DisConnect()
